Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
A violent clash between two rival groups turned South Kolkata’s Kankulia Road near Golpark into a battlefield late Sunday night. The trouble began around 8:30 pm when residents returning from a picnic were reportedly intercepted by nearly 200 youths belonging to the "Sona Pappu" gang. The encounter quickly escalated into a full-blown riot, with miscreants hurling crude bombs and firing at least one round of ammunition. The sounds of explosions and gunshots sent terrified residents, especially women and children, fleeing into their homes for safety.
According to local witnesses, the violence was an attempt by outside miscreants to establish dominance over the area. When residents tried to resist the rampage, the clashing groups resorted to heavy brick-pelting, leaving bloodstains across the road. Two people sustained serious injuries from brick blows and splinters and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The attackers also allegedly targeted a local party office, further fueling the anger of the neighborhood.
The situation became even more volatile when a large police force from the Rabindra Sarobar police station reached the spot. Angry residents, frustrated by what they claimed was a delayed police response, began vandalizing bikes and scooters parked in the vicinity. There were also reports of the mob attempting to attack a police vehicle during the commotion. A local Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor arrived shortly after to pacify the crowd, promising that strict legal action would be taken against the perpetrators.
